Alternatives to Pizza – a Turkish Lahmacun

Flatbreads can be simple pittas, or flavoured focaccias, or stuffed gozlemes – the list goes on and on – and one of the best-known types is a plain flatbread with savoury ingredients spread over the top before baking.  Now, if I say ‘pizza’, many people cannot see beyond their own experiences of tomato sauce-topped circles with melted cheese and a range of toppings – but they don’t have to be that way.

A pizza dough can be topped with a range of sauces, including pesto, red pepper sauce and creme frais, but I wanted to try to make a Lahmacun, which is a Turkish recipe: the dough is covered with tahini, the sesame seed paste, and then with a mix of minced lamb, finely chopped onion, spices (cinammon, allspice and sumac), pomegranate molasses (not as bizarre as it might sound – I got mine from Sainsbury’s), parsley and pine nuts.

Really delicious – and a lot lighter than a cheese-laden pizza.  Try it!
